The Oscar winner will make her long-awaited London debut this autumn.

Internationally renowned actor Susan Sarandon will finally be taking the London theatre scene by storm, in Tracy Letts’ play Mary Page Marlowe for its UK premiere.

She will be performing alongside Oscar nominee Andrea Riseborough, and they will portray the same woman at different ages. The play will be at the Old Vic by Matthew Warchus in his final season as artistic director of the theatre, before stepping down in September 2026.

Audiences will see several actors play the protagonist, in a plot that spans 70 years of the life of an accountant and mother of two in Ohio. It follows themes of both dull and riveting choices.

The play marks a highly anticipated return to the theatre for Susan Sarandon, who made her Broadway debut in 1972 in Gore Vidal's An Evening with Richard Nixon.

Susan Sarandon said: “I’m so honoured to be asked to be in a play during Matthew Warchus’s final season at the Old Vic - terrified but excited”.

Andrea Riseborough said: “It’s an honour to be taking on the role of Mary – amongst others – in Tracy Letts’ poignant play, alongside the extraordinary Susan Sarandon. I’m so very grateful to be working with Matthew again and thrilled to finally work at the Old Vic, a beautiful space.”

Tracy Letts said: “From my first experiences as a playwright here 30 years ago, to the run of August: Osage County at the National, London is an integral part of my development as an artist. I’m deeply gratified to have Mary Page Marlowe at the Old Vic, directed by Matthew, featuring these remarkable actresses. A genuine thrill.”

Mary Page Marlowe will be performed in-the-round, which is Warchus’s favourite configuration, thus will all other productions in his final season. Some seats for the first five previews will be priced at £10.

Mary Page Marlowe will run at the Old Vic from 23 September to 1 November.

Tickets will go on sale at 12pm on 4 July.
