Lights, camera, Muslims. Britain is breaking cinematic ground with its first Muslim International Film Festival. The line-up includes films featuring actors from Riz Ahmed to Nabhaan Rizwan. The festival, which takes place at Odeon Luxe West End, Leicester Square, runs from 30 May to 2 June.

Muslim International Film Festival, also known as MIFF, will showcase Muslim filmmakers. The event will also share stories from filmmakers who are inspired by the Muslim faith. The filmmakers come from Britain, Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey and Sudan. The aim it to celebrate diverse voices, and share a range of different experiences.

The opening night film is Houndes, which was shot in Casablanca, and sees a kidnapping job go wrong. On 31 May, films include Goodbye Julia and Hesitation Wound. On 1 June, A Reckoning of Hearts showcases short films. One of the highlights is Dammi, which is directed by Yann Demange. Set in Northern Ireland during the 1970s, it stars Riz Ahmed and Isabelle Adjani.

The closing night film is In Camera, which is directed by Naqqash Khalid. Starring Nabhaan Rizwan, it follows an actor who faces repeated rejections and decides to create a new role. The satirical drama explores ideas of tokenism in the film industry.

Sajid Varda, Festival Director, explains: “We’re on a mission to weave together cultures through the magic of cinema. MIFF is not just a festival; it’s a vibrant celebration of cultures and stories from across the Muslim world, providing a spotlight on talented emerging and seasoned filmmakers from all corners of the globe.

“As we bring together the film industry and filmmakers alike, our line-up features some of the most courageous and creative minds – each one bringing their A-game to the big screen. These are stories that pack a punch, that resonate deep within, and remind us that there’s more that unites us than divides us.”
