The exhibition explores the life and work of T.S. Ahmed.
Hosted by the Almas Art Foundation, Khartoum from Memory: The Life and Art of T S Ahmed, is a new exhibition dedicated to Sudan. Offering a unique opportunity to learn about the life and work of the artist T.S. Ahmed, the exhibition will run from 27 March to 16 May 2026, from Monday to Saturday, 10am to 6pm.
T. S. Ahmed was a leading figure in the modern art world in Africa and the Middle East. He was a peer of David Hockney’s at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 1962 with a Silver Medal for Excellence, following several other award wins, including Young Contemporaries (London 1961/62) and Graven Image (1962).
His work in London was highly popular and met with critical acclaim. However, after returning to Sudan in 1963 and then working across East Africa, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan, his legacy as an artist remained largely unrecognised globally.
This exhibition will include rare prints from the Royal College of Art archives, alongside key paintings from the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts and private collections. It also marks the launch of KHARTOUM from MEMORY: The Life and Art of T S Ahmed by Fathi Osman, the first publication that documents his legendary career and longstanding artistic contributions.
The exhibition is the fifth of Almas Art Foundation’s series dedicated to Sudan, featuring Sudan: A Visual Art Narrative - An Exhibition of Pioneer Artists (June 2025), The Sudanese Kitchen (July 2025), Sudan Retold (October 2025) and Sudan: A Visual Art Narrative - Second Generation Exhibition (January 2026).
These exhibitions aim to present a more nuanced and humanised image of Sudan, centred on its artistic excellence, rich culture and key values. This is particularly important during the ongoing conflict that has erased vast amounts of the country’s materials. By platforming the talents of Sudanese artists in modern African and global art, this series furthers Almas Art Foundation’s dedication to preserving and celebrating Sudan’s artistic legacy for future generations.
