Baggage screeners are planning to strike at Gatwick.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of wheeling your suitcase through the airport, boarding pass in hand, and knowing a holiday is just a few hours away. But if you’re flying out of London Gatwick Airport this month, your pre-holiday bliss could be tested.
Baggage screeners at the UK’s second-busiest airport are planning to strike – right in the middle of the summer rush and the August Bank Holiday weekend. So, if your trip falls during those dates, here’s how to prepare so you’re not left pacing the terminal while your suitcase sits on the tarmac.
The strike will be carried out by baggage screeners employed by ICTS, the company responsible for ensuring your luggage makes it onto the plane. According to trade union Unite, these workers are among the lowest paid at the airport. The union claims ICTS can afford to offer a pay rise due to the company’s recent profit increase.

The union has scheduled strikes during two periods: from 22 to 26 August, and from 29 August to 2 September. These dates fall across two of the busiest travel weekends. So, whether you’re flying with Emirates or British Airways, you could face delays in luggage handling.
With longer waits at bag drop, flight delays are likely too. However, this does not necessarily mean you’ll be compensated. Unless your flight is rebooked for the next day, airlines are not obliged to cover accommodation or meals. Always check your passenger rights before travelling.
What you can do is arrive early at the airport and pack smart, keeping all essentials in your carry-on. But most importantly, be prepared to pack patience – along with your passport and perhaps a good book.
