Globetotter: Andaz Prague is a stylish spot to celebrate the city

The hotel combines local influences with luxury hospitality.

International hotel brands can often feel like they've been copied and pasted into a new location, but Andaz Prague is a true celebration of the city. Located in the Czech capital's Old Town, this five-star hotel tastefully blends local influences with luxury hospitality. If you want a hotel that captures the culture, this is for you.

In 1912, Andaz Prague's building was constructed, initially serving as the Sugar Industry Insurance Association. Designed by Josef Zasche and Theodor Fischer, the neoclassical structure features sculptures by Franz Metzner on its façade. In 1993, the Ministry of Culture classified it as a listed monument. Over the years, the building attracted star power: Czech actress Adina Mandlová called it home, and it even featured in Tom Cruise's first Mission: Impossible film.

In 2022, Andaz Prague opened. True to the brand's name, which translates to style, it is a smart and sophisticated setting. Each corner pays homage to the heritage with nods to the legend of Golem and Knight Bruncvík's faithful lion. Tip: see if you can spot the camouflage creation in the lifts. Pedro Alves, Front Office Host, explains: "The lion can also be found as a sculpture at the top of the bed, and it says it protects you in your dreams."

Rooms and suites

Andaz Prague is home to 176 carefully curated rooms and suites. The room categories include a One King Bed Premium, Junior Suite, Studio Suite and more. Our wistfully wonderful Wintergarden Suite spans 746 square feet and feels like a one-bedroom apartment.

The suite pays homage to the landmark location with a busk of Franz Kafka, paintings of Prague, and glass from the local brand, Potten and Panneen. The clean and contemporary design spans high ceilings, open-plan living and a mixture of textures, from dark wooden frames to gold finishes on lamps, shower heads and the minibar. Plus, the soft beiges and whites are punctuated by shades of light to deep green.

The Wintergarden Suites overlook the Dancing Fountain or Haymarket Square and are next to the 15th-century Henry's Bell Tower. The dreamy destination is best enjoyed in the dining room, which boasts lots of light and sways softly when the tram travels.

The spacious feeling continues in the bathroom with two sinks, a bathtub and shower, and automatic floor lights that turn on at night. Stocked with Mooi products, extra items are available on request including a comb, deodorant, mouthwash and toothpaste. Be warned: requests can get lost in translation, but the staff are fast and friendly.

Restaurants and bars

Start the day with breakfast, which is served across the lobby lounge and MEZ bar. The options range from a local Czech Benedict to international Smashed Avocado and Turkish Eggs. The Power Bowl is a pretty plate that combines oats, dragon fruit, kiwi and mango. While the buffet is on the smaller side, it still feels swish with its cheeses, exotic fruit and sourdough bread.

ZEM Restaurant is an upmarket Czech bistro, and attracts a mix of locals and visitors. Chef de Cuisine Richard Bielik is behind the menu, which blends Czech traditions with Japanese influences. Take your pick from banquettes lining the sides, tables by the window, and countertop seats around the open kitchen. If you want something Czech, there are elevated takes on classic comfort food. The Langos comes in a petite portion, and the Svickova is a beautiful bun stuffed with braised beef.

MEZ bar draws its inspiration from Japanese izakayas. Sit under the glass atrium and order a cocktail created with local ingredients. The Andaz Hour takes place daily at 5pm: sniff three scents, pick the perfume and a cocktail is created especially for you.

With rooms this refined, you won't be judged for lingering and lounging. The all-day menu is brilliant at the basics, and the Andaz Burger, with its firm bun and crispy fries, is one of the best in-room burgers we've had.

What Andaz Prague lacks in a pool, it makes up for with its indulgent spa services. Located in the basement, Femme Spa Next Level includes a Finnish-inspired steam and sauna. The treatments range from a Hot White Chocolate Massage, to Mimi Luzon 24K Treatment with gold. Note: there are male and female therapists, but the man was the only one who could perform the Deep Tissue Massage. The therapist is amazingly attentive, and relieves my shoulder knots. Plus, there is a state-of-the-art gym and equipment from yoga mats to weights can be ordered to the room.
