Oxford Street will be pedestrianised between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street.

Shoppers, we have some exciting news. The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced that Oxford Street will be pedestrianised this summer. This marks a new chapter for one of the world’s busiest shopping streets.

The aim is to create a safer, greener and more attractive environment. City Hall has confirmed that Transport for London will proceed with plans to remove traffic between Great Portland Street and Orchard Street. Under the approved plans, the designated section will be closed to private motor vehicles, buses, taxis, cyclists, e-scooters and pedicabs. Service and delivery vehicles will be able to access the area between midnight and 7am.

Buses will be rerouted via Wigmore Street and Henrietta Place, with TfL estimating that journey times will increase by less than a minute. New pedestrian crossings, bus stops, taxi ranks and additional blue-badge parking bays will also be introduced nearby, alongside alternative cycling routes.

Sadiq said: “I am delighted to be moving forward with my bold vision to transform Oxford Street into a world-leading urban space for shopping, leisure and outdoor events. We will outline more details in the coming days as we continue building a better, more prosperous London for everyone.”

Adam Hug, Leader of Westminster City Council, added: “Westminster Council’s view on Oxford Street pedestrianisation is a matter of longstanding public record. Over the last 18 months, we have secured a number of key improvements to the Mayor of London’s original plans to ensure that the proposals for Oxford Street are more deliverable and better meet the needs of local residents, businesses and wider London.”
