Saucy Books is located in the heart of Notting Hill.

Saucy Books, the first bookshop exclusively dedicated to romance novels, has opened in Notting Hill, London. Following the popularity of romance novels, Saucy Books is a trailblazer – and, is the only bookshop of its kind.

The shop will serve as a community space for fans of romance novels to browse books in person, connect with others, and foster creativity. It will also host events around book releases, including evenings full of food, drinks. Plus, talks from various authors to celebrate their work.

Founded by Sarah Maxwell, the concept is described as “a love letter to independent bookstores, bold women, and the belief that pleasure is a worthy pursuit”. Sarah hopes to challenge misconceptions about the romance genre – including the idea that it's uninspiring, unintellectual, or exclusively for women. She argues that such assumptions are rooted in misogyny and literary snobbery.

Speaking on the issue, Sarah said: “People think it’s less than or low quality, which is not true at all. These are all very high-quality authors and high-quality stories. I think there’s an inherent misogyny around it. A lot of the time, the sorts of things that women like across arts and culture tend to get discounted. These books are about the female perspective and the female gaze, when most media is through the male gaze.”

The arrival of Saucy Books comes at a time of rising interest in the romance genre. The genre recently contributed to UK fiction revenue surpassing £1 billion for the first time in history.

Saucy Books is now open.
