Created with Maison Matisse, the new Masters of Art collection transforms the French artist’s visual legacy into a series of luxurious writing instruments.

Montblanc has long understood that a writing instrument can be more than a practical object. In the right hands, it becomes a statement of craftsmanship, heritage and taste. Now, the maison turns its attention to one of the most influential artists of the 20th century, unveiling a new Montblanc Masters of Art collection inspired by Henri Matisse.

Created in partnership with Maison Matisse, the design house founded by the artist’s family, the collection honours Matisse through a series of limited edition pens that channel the elegance, imagination and artistic freedom that defined his career.

The new Montblanc x Matisse collection

Rather than focusing on a single period of Matisse’s practice, the Montblanc Matisse collection draws from the breadth of his work, translating his creative language into a suite of luxurious writing instruments. Matisse revolutionised the way colour, line and form could be used to evoke emotion, whether through his Fauvist paintings, sculptures or later paper cut-outs. That spirit is woven into every detail of the collection.

The silhouette of the pens references the organic curves of Matisse’s sculptural works, while the clip takes inspiration from his celebrated cut-outs, specifically The Sheaf from 1953. Each edition has been designed as a distinct interpretation of the artist’s world. The Limited Edition 4810 nods to Blue Nude III with a striking blue-and-white lacquer finish, while the Limited Edition 888 references The Romanian Blouse with vivid colour, textile-inspired accents, and decorative detailing.

Elsewhere, the collection traces key moments in Matisse’s artistic journey. His trip to Tahiti in 1930 informs one edition, while the movement and rhythm of The Dance II inspire the Limited Edition 96. At the very top end of the range, the eight-piece pinnacle edition pays homage to Purple Robe and Anemones, elevating the collection into the realm of haute objet.

Crafted from lacquer, sterling silver, precious metals, wood and gemstones, the collection reflects Montblanc’s commitment to exceptional artistry and meticulous detail. It is a release that will appeal not only to collectors of writing instruments, but also to those with an eye for luxury design and art-led objects.

Completing the launch is a notebook and a three-colour ink set inspired by Matisse’s use of red, blue and green, offering admirers the chance to bring a little of the artist’s palette into everyday life.
