The original venue welcomed Amy Winehouse and Gil Scott-Heron.
The Jazz Café has made its mark in London, and welcomed superstars from around the world. The original venue can be found in Camden, and is now expanding to Stratford. The opening date has not yet been confirmed, and the move is part of the regeneration in the area.
Jazz Café’s new proposed location is the Rex Theatre. Located on Stratford High Street, the Art Deco building has been closed for two years. Built in 1896, the venue was originally used as a theatre and opera house. In 1933, it was converted into a cinema. In 1969, it became a bingo hall, and then later a nightclub.
The Jazz Cafe opened in 1992, and has since welcomed legendary performers. The artists span funk, disco, jazz and soul, and include Jamiroquai, Gil Scott-Heron and Amy Winehouse.
Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “Jazz Café East promises to let residents in Newham have world class entertainment on their doorstep. It is a show of confidence for the future of the borough, which will bring with it jobs and prosperity.
“Businesses are waking up to see all that the borough and its people have to offer. It is vitally important to get the right partners in as part of our Building Newham’s Creative Future cultural strategy which is a big part of our plans for Building a Fairer Newham.”
Stratford is also set to welcome Sadler’s Wells East, V&A East Storehouse and a range of cafés and restaurants.
