Travel to Europe from London is about to get much easier.

Travel between London and continental Europe is about to become more seamless and far more sustainable. In a move set to reshape the way we explore the continent, Eurostar has announced ambitious plans to launch high-speed train services to Germany and Switzerland by the early 2030s.

That means Londoners could soon find themselves gliding from St Pancras International to Frankfurt or Geneva in just over five hours—no airports, no baggage queues, and no turbulence. These new services are part of a bold €2 billion investment, which also includes the addition of up to 50 new trains to Eurostar’s growing fleet.

The expansion comes as demand for greener, stress-free travel continues to rise. Recent data shows that more travellers, particularly those conscious of their carbon footprint, are favouring rail over air, even if the journey takes a little longer. Frankfurt and Geneva, both major business and cultural hubs, were chosen as key destinations due to their popularity and connectivity.

Of course, before the first train departs, there are logistics to be sorted: from track access agreements and enhanced passenger facilities to new border control checkpoints. With backing from various European governments, the project is on track to move from vision to reality.

In the meantime, Eurostar is already expanding its existing operations. By the end of the year, the operator will increase its daily return journeys between London and Paris from 17 to 20, and add two more services to its Amsterdam route.

While Germany and Switzerland remain a few years away, this expansion by Eurostar is guaranteed to be a game-changer for tourism in the region.
