The Abdel Wahab concert celebrates the "Mozart of the Arabs."
Get ready for some marvellous music. An exciting evening of music honouring the legendary Egyptian composer and singer, Mohamed Abdel Wahab, is coming to Drury Lane Theatre. The event takes place on 23 November, and here’s what to expect.
The 90-minute performance will feature internationally acclaimed Egyptian soprano Fatma Said, accompanied by 57 musicians from the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This marks the collaboration between the Egyptian artist and one of the United Kingdom’s most prestigious ensembles.
Abdel Wahab is one of the most influential singers in Arab music. Born in Cairo, Egypt, he began his career as a singer and later became a composer. He blends traditional Arabic melodies with Western influences.
People often call Abdel Wahab the Mozart of the Arabs, the Arab Frank Sinatra, and the Arab Beethoven. They also consider him the father of modern Egyptian music.
Throughout his career, he composed songs that legendary artists such as Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez, and Fairuz performed. These songs feature rich lyrics and orchestral complexity.
Abdel Wahab has worked not only on music and film compositions but also on Egypt’s national anthem. He is credited with orchestrating the anthem, which was composed by Sayed Darwish and with lyrics by Sheikh Younis Al-Qadi. Plus, he composed musical scores for the national anthems of the United Arab Republic and Oman.
