The new West End production is set to bring the two stars together.


The transformation of Gillian Anderson from screen to stage has been wonderful to watch – and now, the former The X-Files actress will star in the theatrical production of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. The show will run at Soho Place from 21 September to 19 December 2026, and tickets are available now.

The new West End production of Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is set to bring Gillian Anderson and Billy Crudup together. The show is directed by Marianne Elliott, known for War Horse, Company and Sunday in the Park with George. Plus, it is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions in association with Nica Burns.

For Gillian, taking on the role of Martha has long been a lifelong ambition. She shared her passion for the play and how excited she was to share the story with a new audience. She said: “I saw it many, many, many years ago, and fell in love with it as a piece. I always had a fantasy of doing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?

Gillian was born in Chicago, United States, and moved to New York to begin her acting career. She rose to fame in the TV series The X-Files, which ran for almost ten years. She has also appeared in Sex Education and The Fall, as well as stage productions including A Streetcar Named Desire and All About Eve.

Billy Crudup was born in New York, United States. He trained at the University of North Carolina and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He first appeared in independent films, including Jesus’ Son and Almost Famous. He has starred on stage in The Coast of Utopia, and on screen in Watchmen and The Morning Show.
