The concept combines spice and stories from Calcutta and beyond.
A new restaurant, Tangra, is set to open in Soho, and it's bringing with it the bold flavours of Indo-Chinese cuisine. The name comes from a street in Calcutta, and the menu is inspired by the city's Hakka Chinese community. Scheduled to open in October, here's what you need to know.
Tangra will be located on Frith Street in the heart of Soho, taking over the site previously occupied by Soho Ceviche. The restaurant will seat up to 60 guests. The interiors are being designed by Quadrant Design, the team behind projects for Bar Kroketa and EL&N.
Tangra brings together a talented and creative culinary team. Executive Chef Nikesh Sawant, formerly the development chef at Mildreds, will lead the kitchen. His international experience spans Australia, India, and the UAE, and he draws culinary inspiration not only from Calcutta but also from Nepal and Tibet.
Nikesh explains: "Tangra is food with fire and attitude, shaped by our team's roots, stories and creativity. We only work with the freshest produce and quality suppliers to make sure every bite explodes with freshness and flavour."
The menu is built around sharing plates and offers a wide selection of vegetarian-friendly dishes. Highlights include signature Momos, which are wok-seared or served in a tomato-lemongrass jhol; Sadeko Chick'n Kati Roll; Honey Chilli Waffle Aloo; and Frankie Mogo Fries. Work dishes include Chilli Paneer, Hakka Noodles, and Manchurian Kofta. Sides dishes include Burnt Garlic Rice and Schezwan Fried Rice.
Tangra looks set to become a popular late-night spot, and it will stay open until 1.30am on certain nights.
