Shop and sip inside Dr Martens flagship Soho store.
Dr Martens has long made a name for itself with its statement style and strong punk following. Now, Dr Martens’ flagship Soho store in Carnaby has expanded its offering with the opening of an in-house café. Located within the brand’s impressive two-storey building, the café is called Doctor’s Orders.
Dr Martens was founded in 1947, when German doctor Klaus Märtens developed a cushioned sole to aid recovery from a foot injury. The design was later refined and introduced to the UK in 1960. The concept quickly gained popularity among postmen, factory workers and police officers for its durability and comfort. Over time, the boots were adopted by subcultures including punks and musicians.
Doctor’s Orders is a new concept created specifically for what Dr Martens describes as a “beacon store”. To bring the idea to life, the brand has partnered with an impressive line-up of collaborators.
FACT Dining Award London nominee Dusty Knuckle has made the journey from Dalston to Carnaby. The team are serving a selection of vegetarian toasties. Options range from a Spiced Spinach and Potato Toastie with red onion, Kashmiri chilli sauce, date and tamarind chutney, to Cheese and Leek Toastie with brown butter and pickled mustard seed on house sourdough.

Those with a sweet tooth are well catered for by Luminary Bakery. The options include Carrot Cake, Lemon Loaves, Peanut Butter Cookies and more. Peckham’s Old Spike Roastery supplies hot drinks, from coffee to hot chocolate. Meanwhile, teas are provided by Nemi Teas.
All of the collaborators are community-focused. Dusty Knuckle runs a youth training programme, and Luminary Bakery supports women who have experienced homelessness or violence. Old Spike Roastery trains and employs people affected by homelessness, and Nemi Teas creates employment opportunities for refugees.
