The Materia Prima menu showcases Japanese dishes.


Notting Hill, London, is home to a wide range of restaurants. Now, Chef Victor Garvey has set his sights on the area and opened Materia Prima, also known as Mater1a. If you’re looking to put a new restaurant on your radar, here’s what you need to know.

Victor is behind the Michelin-starred SOLA and is now expanding his restaurant portfolio. At the heart of Materia Prima is seasonal produce, and the team pride themselves on a sense of simplicity. Garvey said: "It’s my own little world that I’d like to personally invite people into, one service at a time."

Materia Prima draws inspiration from Japan. The offering includes a tasting menu showcasing a range of dishes. The lunch Reduced Menu starts from £99, while the Standard Tasting Menu starts from £169. For dinner, the Standard Tasting Menu is priced from £169, and the Carte Blanche Menu starts from £214.

Dishes include chawanmushi of Bouchot mussels with finger lime, coriander root and green curry. The duck wing is stuffed with wind-dried sausage, black trumpet mushrooms and koji rice, and glazed in ume-plum tare. The langoustine gyoza comes with duck liver and preserved fig, finished with black truffle and aged black rice vinegar.

The drinks menu showcases a range of wines, including bottles from small producers in France, Spain and the United States. Plus, each dinner service comes with a DJ.
