Burgers, lobsters and Martini hours land in London.

London loves a good comeback story, whether it’s a beloved celebrity or a much-missed restaurant. Now, Automat has made its return to the capital. Opening off Berkeley Square, Mayfair, the revived restaurant brings a polished American diner experience back to London.

New York restaurateur and nightclub owner Carlos Almada originally created Automat. The name pays homage to early twentieth-century cafés where diners bought food from vending machines and display boxes.

Carlos’ interpretation offered a glamorous twist on the casual American diner, complete with comfort-food favourites served in a sleek Mayfair setting. The original Dover Street site has gone, but Automat has now opened on Mount Street, within the Tanner Krolle building.

The first Automat became known for its indulgent menu: eggs, mac and cheese, pancakes, steak, waffles and more. The aim was to create haute cuisine in a relaxed, welcoming setting – supported by a wine list specialising in Napa Cabernets.

The new Automat honours the original spirit. On Instagram, the photos are captioned playfully, including “always in the mood” and “TGIF”. The menu is filled with American classics, including burgers, lobster rolls, Caesar salads and pecan pie. Martini lovers can also enjoy The Automat Martini Hour, running from Tuesday to Thursday between 4pm and 7pm.

Guests enter through a wooden door that opens onto an elegant, softly lit space. Look out for black-and-white tiled floors, dark wood accents, crisp white tablecloths, distressed green-and-white walls, trumpet-shaped lamps and plenty of potted plants. The result is a stylish blend of old-world charm and modern London polish.
