Erykah hails from Texas, United States. She changed the spelling of her name from Erica to Erykah, as she believed the original name was derived from a slave name. The surname Badu is a reference to scatting in jazz.
In 1997, she released her first studio album, Baduizm. The singles include Appletree, Next Lifetime, On and On, and Otherwise of the Game. In 2000, she released her second studio album, Mama’s Gun. The singles include Bag Lady, Cleva, and Didn’t Cha Know? Her albums also include Worldwide Underground and New Amerykah Part One.
