The display explores traditional Afghan weavers.

Sotheby’s London has launched a new exhibition, Weaving Poems, running from 28 July to 22 August. Inspired by Bamyan, Afghanistan, the exhibition celebrates the centuries-old craft of carpet weaving in the region.

Weaving Poems showcases a collection of 24 carpets created by Afghan designer Maryam Omar and the women weavers of Bamyan. The designs are inspired by poems and stories connected to traditional weaving practices, as well as the natural landscapes of the Bamyan Valley.

The women of Afghanistan continue to face significant obstacles in reaching their full potential. These challenges include limited access to global markets, financial constraints, a lack of technical training, and ongoing security concerns. The exhibition serves not only as a showcase but also as a global platform for these women and their artisanal communities, enabling them to feel empowered and acknowledged.

Artisans handwove the carpets on display using locally sourced spun wool and natural and mineral dyes. Sotheby’s London is exhibiting only 14 of the original 24 carpets, and all are available for purchase.

A programme of workshops and panel discussions accompanies the exhibition, led by experts in craftsmanship and heritage. The workshops, hosted by the craftswomen themselves, cover a range of topics from calligraphy to jewellery making.

Maryam said: “This tradition has been beautifully carried over centuries by the weaving women… unlike other arts that unfortunately disappeared. I wanted the maker to be the main subject of the collection.”

Alexandra Roy, Head of Sales in Sotheby’s Modern and Contemporary Middle East department, added:
“These works are not only beautiful, but also celebrate the incredible quality of the handmade, the innovative techniques employed, and the hard work behind each piece, highlighting the power of culture to transcend borders.”
