Choose Trainspotting the Musical at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. If those words ring a bell, you’ll be absolutely delighted to hear what’s coming next – Trainspotting the Musical. Yes, Irvine Welsh’s novel is making the leap from page to stage and into a full-blown musical. Running from 15 July to 5 September 2026, it will take place at Theatre Royal Haymarket.

First published in 1993, Trainspotting marked Welsh’s debut novel and introduced readers to a gang of Scottish outsiders living life on their own chaotic terms. The story covers addiction, tangled friendships and life on the fringes.

In 1996, the film Trainspotting was released. Directed by Danny Boyle, it catapulted Ewan McGregor to fame. Packed with energy and attitude, it also had – in true Boyle style – an unforgettable soundtrack. Tracks included "Born Slippy," "Lust for Life," and "Perfect Day."

Now, the story is being reimagined again – this time with a musical twist. Trainspotting the Musical will revisit Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie and the rest, while introducing some fresh new characters along the way. Drawing from both the original novel and its prequel Skagboys, it promises a new take on the story.

Welsh is getting stuck into the music, teaming up with Steve McGuinness to create original songs for the show. Direction comes from Caroline Jay Ranger, who has brought favourites like Only Fools and Horses and Fawlty Towers to the stage. Plus, Renton will be played by the Scottish actor Robbie Scott.
