The invite-only event will welcome big-name celebrities.
The Met Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York makes headlines around the world. Attracting famous faces, it is an annual fashion event that raises money for the Institute. Now, The British Museum Ball in London has been announced and looks set to be a glittering and glamorous occasion, poised to rival its New York counterpart. The event takes place on 18 October, and is invite-only.
The British Museum’s director, Dr Nicholas Cullinan, and Indian arts patron Isha Ambani have come together to create the event. The British Museum Ball will draw inspiration from the exhibition Ancient India: Living Traditions, with a theme influenced by the colours and light of India.
Committee members include Giles Deacon, Bella Freud, Miuccia Prada and Philip Treacy. Artists and writers involved include Hew Locke, Grayson Perry and Zadie Smith. Other notable names include Naomi Campbell, Alexa Chung, Idris Elba and Edward Enninful.
Helen Brocklebank, Chief Executive of Walpole, is a member of the committee organising the event. She stated: “I had a committee meeting for the British Museum ball (think Met Gala ambition with UK uniqueness).”
The British Museum Ball will feature a drinks reception and a dinner held among the museum’s artefacts, with a silent auction running throughout the night. Entertainment will include performances by Grammy Award-nominated sitarist Anoushka Shankar and Grammy Award-winning conductor and composer Jules Buckley. Plus, there will be an orchestra accompanying the event, along with a surprise guest performance.
