Sudan: A Visual Art Narrative – Second Generation Exhibition brings together pioneering Sudanese artists whose work shaped a vital chapter of the country’s contemporary art history.

A new Sudanese art exhibition in London celebrating the country's contemporary art has opened at Almas Art Foundation in Southwark. Titled Sudan: A Visual Art Narrative – Second Generation Exhibition, the show runs from 16 January to 7 March 2026 and spotlights artists associated with Sudan’s second-generation modern art movement. Through painting and other visual works, the exhibition offers a deeper view of the ideas, aesthetics, and cultural influences that shaped a crucial period in Sudanese art.

Curated by Dr Fathi Osman and Yafil Mubarak, the exhibition builds on the foundations laid by the movement’s first generation, while focusing on the artists who expanded its visual language in bold new directions. Rather than following a single style, the presentation reflects a spectrum of approaches, from expressive abstraction and symbolism to more narrative-led work, united by a commitment to artistic experimentation and cultural continuity.

Crucially, the selection also acknowledges the difficult circumstances in which many of these artists practised. The works speak to endurance and imagination, shaped by periods of instability that have affected Sudan for decades. Seen together, the exhibition highlights the resilience of Sudanese cultural expression and the role of artists in preserving identity, memory, and community amid uncertainty.

This marks the fourth chapter in Almas Art Foundation’s ongoing Sudan-focused programme, following Sudan: A Visual Art Narrative – An Exhibition of Pioneer Artists (June 2025), The Sudanese Kitchen (July 2025), and Sudan Retold (October 2025). Collectively, the series has aimed to present a more nuanced, human perspective on Sudan, foregrounding creative excellence and cultural richness at a time when the country’s artistic heritage faces increasing pressure.

Almas Art Foundation is open Monday to Saturday, from 11am to 6pm, and entry to this Sudanese art exhibition in London is free.
