The UK's longest-running Arab arts celebration returns with a powerful reflection on heritage, identity, and belonging.

The Liverpool Arab Arts Festival (LAAF) is now in full swing, bringing a dynamic celebration of Arab culture to the heart of the UK. Running from 11 to 20 July, this year's edition unfolds under the evocative theme of Nostalgia, inviting audiences to explore memory, identity and shared cultural heritage through a packed programme of art, music, performance, literature, and community events.

Now in its 23rd year, the festival has evolved from its grassroots beginnings into a major cultural fixture on the UK's arts calendar, drawing talent from across the Arab world, Europe, the US and beyond. While the theme reflects on the past, it's a timely lens through which to consider the challenges of the present, encouraging both introspection and celebration.

Founded by Taher Qassim, a Yemeni-born activist and community leader, LAAF was created to platform Arab voices in Liverpool and foster meaningful cultural exchange. Awarded an MBE in 2008 for his efforts, Qassim has since passed the torch to his daughter Afrah, but remains a guiding force. "The theme of 'Nostalgia' is a reflection of both how far we've come and where we began," he shares. "We proudly offer a platform to artists from across the Arab world, Europe, the US, and beyond - something we could only have dreamed of."

Among the standout events this year are Arabs Are Not Funny, a bold comedy night that challenges tired stereotypes, and The Book of Sanaa, a community-driven project celebrating Yemeni heritage and storytelling. The festival culminates with the popular Family Day at the Palm House in Sefton Park, a free and inclusive event that captures the spirit of LAAF in full: open, joyful, and rooted in connection.

Whether you're part of the Arab diaspora or simply curious to learn more, LAAF offers a vibrant space to engage, reflect and celebrate.
