The Tarek Atoui installation will be unveiled in October.
Tate and Hyundai Motor Company are delighted to announce that Tarek Atoui will create the next annual Hyundai Commission. Running from 13 October 2026 to 11 April 2027, this exciting new site-specific work will fill the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern.
Atoui’s commission marks the 11th instalment in this landmark series supported by Hyundai Motor. An artist and composer renowned for his inventive performances and installations, Atoui’s practice joyfully challenges how we think about, listen to and experience sound.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, and now based in Paris, France, Atoui draws on deep research into music history, instrumentation and production to create rich, multi-sensory environments. His work invites audiences to encounter sound in new and unexpected ways, expanding it beyond the purely auditory.

At the heart of his practice is the creation of beautifully engineered instruments, developed in collaboration with artists, composers and makers. These instruments also function as sculptural objects and often incorporate organic materials such as glass, water and ceramics. The pieces are activated through touch, breath and motors, and aim to create an immersive installation.
Catherine Wood, Interim Director of Tate Modern, said: “Tarek Atoui has captivated audiences worldwide with his bold and imaginative approach to sound. Seamlessly blending music, technology, sculpture and performance, he is a truly cross-disciplinary artist whose work speaks to contemporary social, historical and political themes. Space and architecture play a vital role in his explorations of sound and vibration, and we are thrilled to see how he will activate the iconic Turbine Hall and connect with its audiences.”
DooEun Choi, Art Director of Hyundai Motor Company, added: “Tarek Atoui sculpts sound into something tangible and deeply engaging, bringing together musical instruments, physical space and the audience. For the eleventh Hyundai Commission, we are excited to see how his radically collaborative and experimental practice will create moments of shared reflection on the world we live in today.”
