The play draws inspiration from William Shakespeare.

Shakespeare’s Globe is renowned for its open-air setting, which evokes how plays were traditionally performed in William Shakespeare’s time. During the winter, productions move indoors – and the latest season has just been announced. Running from 7 February to 11 April, Deep Azure, a play by Chadwick Boseman, will join the line-up.

Deep Azure was written by the late Chadwick Boseman, who was born in South Carolina, United States, and studied directing at Howard University. In 2013, he had his breakthrough role in 42, portraying baseball legend Jackie Robinson. He went on to play other historic figures, including James Brown in Get On Up and Thurgood Marshall in Marshall. Chadwick is best known for his role in Marvel’s Black Panther series, and was the first Black actor to headline a Marvel movie.

Deep Azure is a powerful drama inspired by Shakespeare. While studying at Oxford University, Chadwick was influenced by the works of the English playwright. The story was originally written as a poem before being developed into a stage play. It follows a young woman, Azure, whose life unravels after the shooting of her fiancé, Deep – a victim of racial profiling and police brutality. Director Tristan Fynn-Aiduenu will bring the story to life on stage, marking his directorial debut at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Other highlights of Shakespeare’s Globe’s winter season include The Tempest, running from 17 January to 12 April.

Tickets to see Deep Azure are available now.
