The star will perform at Hampstead Theatre.

Elizabeth Dulau is heading back to the stage, and she’s taking on one of British literature’s most fascinating figures in the process. The actor, best known for her role as Kleya Marki in Andor, has been cast as Mary Ann Evans, the young woman who would later write under the pen name George Eliot, in Hampstead Theatre’s upcoming production Bird Grove.

The new play, written by Olivier Award-winning playwright Alexi Kaye Campbell and directed by Anna Ledwich, receives its world premiere at Hampstead Theatre, running from 13 February to 21 March 2026.

Set in 1841, Bird Grove finds Mary Ann at “marriageable age”, as her father Robert uproots their lives and relocates them to Bird Grove House with one clear objective: to find her a suitable husband through the local church. But Mary Ann’s mind is moving faster than the world around her. As her reading expands and new ideas take hold, her confidence grows, and so does the tension at home. What follows is a sharp, intimate portrait of family ties under pressure, where love and loyalty collide with belief, independence and the urge to become more than what society has mapped out for you.

Elizabeth Dulau stars opposite Owen Teale, who plays Robert Evans. The supporting cast includes Jonnie Broadbent, Jolyon Coy, Tom Espiner, Rebecca Scroggs, James Staddon and Sarah Woodward.

Away from the stage, Dulau most recently starred in House of Guiness, and her previous stage performances include theatres such as the Young Vic and Southwark Playhouse.
