A Grain of Sand runs at the Arcola Theatre in January.

Get ready for culture in the capital. A Grain of Sand is heading out on a UK tour, coming to the Arcola Theatre on 22 and 29 January at 7.30pm, and 24 and 31 January at 3pm. If you’d like to get hold of tickets, here’s what you need to know.

A Grain of Sand is a powerful one-woman show exploring war through the eyes of a child. Combining Palestinian folklore with real-life testimonies from children living in contemporary Gaza, it tells the story of Renad, a young Gazan girl whose journey is defined by resilience, hope, and the right of children simply to be children.

Renad sets out on a quest, carrying only the echoes of her grandmother’s tales and the spark of her own imagination. Her journey is both physical and emotional as she searches for her family and the mythical Anqaa, the Palestinian Phoenix, a symbol of endurance and rebirth. The production weaves together storytelling, memory, and lived experience to create an intimate, moving portrait of life under conflict.

On 24 and 31 January at 3pm, audiences can join a 30-minute question-and-answer session with performer Sarah Agha and writer-director Elias Matar. The session offers insight into the creation and themes of the show.

In addition, the production will be accompanied by Each Child a Light, an international collaborative quilt project initiated by artist Fiona Bailey. Each square honours an individual child killed in Gaza, providing space to mourn, remember, and reflect. Fiona Bailey will also host an intimate quilting workshop before the matinee on 24 January.
