ACT test drives the South Korean cars on the streets of Seoul.

Audacious, progressive and distinctly Korean. The South Korean car manufacturer Genesis Motor LLC, better known as Genesis, prides itself on these pillars. The brand launched its redesigned GV80 and GV80 Coupe, and FACT was not only invited to test drive the cars, but on the streets of Seoul.

As we made our way to Genesis Suji, we spotted the brand's cars on the road. The sleek and stylish showroom is a great place to start your journey, whether it's a test drive or a purchase. The venue's industrial chic look includes exposed concrete, natural wood and layered steel sheets inspired by traditional hanbok clothes. Other showrooms use spotlights, but this uses flat lights to reduce reflections. And, if you are buying a new car, you are welcomed to a private, personalised room and treated to an unveiling ceremony.

FACT attended a special launch party of the GV80 and GV80 Coupe at Seoul Wave Art Center on 22 April 2024, and were one of the first groups to test drive the cars. Mike Song, Global Head of Genesis, explained: "Luxury is about crafting timelessness. We challenge the norms and redefine luxury in daring new ways. Our journey is one of constant advancement. Our heritage enriches our design language, and it allows us to carry a distinct aesthetic of Korean values."

Omar Al-Zubaidi, CEO of Genesis Motors Middle East and Africa, added: "We are thrilled to announce the launch of our redesigned GV80 and the first coupe SUV, the GV80 Coupe. Coupled with our unwavering dedication to providing exceptional driving experiences, these new releases hold particular significance for the Middle East. The region's perceptive tastes and appreciation for luxury and performance inspire us to deliver vehicles that not only meet but exceed expectations. Our latest coupe model and the newly designed GV80 will resonate with drivers in the Middle Eastern, embodying the essence of sophistication, style, and unparalleled craftsmanship that Genesis is renowned for."

Genesis GV80

Genesis GV80 made its debut on the market in January 2020. Over the years, it has sold more than 170,000 units, and this marks the first model change in three years. The result is an elevated experience with improved comfort and safety features.

Our test drive experience with the GV80 took us more than 44 kilometres from Goyang to Paju and Imjingak, which is on the border with North Korea. The GV80 is equipped with two powertrain options: a gasoline 2.5 turbo engine, which produces 304 horsepower and 43.0 kgf-m of torque, and a gasoline 3.5 turbo engine, which produces 380 horsepower and 54.0 kgf-m of torque.

The GV80 has been designed with the beauty of white spaces in mind. The car comes in 11 exterior colours, five interior colors, and new interior additions include earth brown, bordeaux brown and glacier white.

The elegant interior combines state-of-the-art features with a sophisticated design. The front includes a newly designed two-line crest grille and the signature two-line headlamps. The high-quality material enhancements include the two-tone-coloured steering wheels, shift by wire for a comfortable grip, crash pads, and a centre console with soft Nappa leather as well as wood.

The AVN (audio, video and navigation) screen sits at 27-inches, and the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) system is touch-based. Plus, functional features range from a redesigned wireless smartphone charging tray to enlarged cup holders.

Genesis GV80 Coupe marks the launch of Genesis' first coupe SUV. We drove the car 64 kilometres from Imjingak to Goyang. The car offers two engine choices, including the 3.5 gasoline turbo 48V electric supercharger with 415 horsepower and 56.0 kgf-m.

The GV80 Coupe embodies Genesis' athletic elegant aesthetic. The car is available in 12 exterior colour options, including the exclusive Bering Blue. Bringing together the sportiness of a coupe with the practicality of an SUV, it is suitable for short to speedy drives.

The exterior boasts a classy yet contemporary design and includes MLA-powered LED headlamps, a double-layered crest grille and four air vents. When viewed from the side, the arch-sloping body gives it a striking yet strong silhouette. It's great for long journeys, thanks to the reclining rear seats and foldable luggage shelf. Plus, the 20- and 22-inch wheels, two-ton D-cut steering wheel, and metal accents add to the signature sports style.

Audacious? Yes. Progressive? Yes. Distinctly Korean? Hell yes.
